The calm before the storm — that Sept. 1 storm when rosters expand to 40 and we get the biggest rush of debuts since the first two weeks of the season — saw just a handful of callups and debuts this week, so let’s get right to them, shall we?
STEVE EDLEFSEN
RHP, San Francisco Giants
B/T: S/R H/W: 6-2/195 BORN: June 27, 1985
ACQUIRED: Selected in the 16th round of 2007 out of Nebraska
PROMOTED: Recalled from Triple-A Fresno Aug. 21 when P Brian Wilson went on the DL.
DEBUT: Aug. 21 in a 6-4 11-inning win against the Houston Astros: The third of six pitchers, he struck out two in 1 1/3 innings of hitless shutout ball.
NOTES: After a huge breakthrough season out of the bullpen in 2009, when Edlefsen combined between Advanced A San Jose, then-Double-A Connecticut and Fresno to go 8-1 with a 1.95 ERA and 71 strikeouts in 69 1/3 innings, he followed up with a fine 2010 campaign with the Grizzlies, going 7-2 with a 2.38 ERA and 85 strikeouts in 64 1/3 innings. This summer, though, was interrupted by injuries, limiting him to just 32 games and a 5.66 ERA in 41 1/3 innings back at Fresno, as well as a few innings in rehab in the Arizona League. He replaces Wilson on the roster but don’t look for him to fill in as the stopper.
RYAN LAVARNWAY
C, Boston Red Sox
B/T: R/R H/W: 6-4/225 BORN: Aug. 7, 1987
ACQUIRED: Selected in the sixth round of 2008 out of Yale University
PROMOTED: Contract purchased from Triple-A Pawtucket Aug. 18 when 3B Kevin Youkilis went on the DL.
DEBUT: Aug. 18 in a 4-3 win against the Kansas City Royals: The starting DH, he batted seventh and went 0-for-4.
NOTES: The Ivy League career leader with 33 homers while at Yale, Lavarnway is the epitome of the “offensive catcher” though in his defense he’s been working on that defense. Still, he is more valued for his bat and is more likely to see time at DH than behind the plate. The Southern California native, who led the NCAA with a .467 average and .873 slugging percentage as a sophomore, already had 30 homers in 110 games between Double-A Portland and Pawtucket prior to his callup, with a .293 average, 85 RBI and a .559 slugging mark. Between Advanced A Salem and Portland last summer he hit .288 with 22 homers and 102 RBI and batted .285 with 21 homers and 87 RBI in his first full season, 2009, at Class A Greenville.
WADE MILEY
LHP, Arizona Diamondbacks
B/T: L/L H/W: 6-1/220 BORN: Nov. 13, 1986
ACQUIRED: Selected in the supplemental first round of 2008 out of Southeastern Louisiana
PROMOTED: Contract purchased from Triple-A Reno Aug. 16 when P Jason Marquis went on the DL.
DEBUT: Aug. 20 in an 8-1 loss to the Atlanta Braves: The starting pitcher, he took the loss, allowing five runs on seven hits over four innings, walking two and striking out five while giving up a homer to Dan Uggla.
NOTES: Miley brings an arsenal of four pitches — a low-mid-90s fastball, plus slider, changeup and curve — with him to the majors, after combining between Double-A Mobile and Reno for a 4.30 ERA and 103 strikeouts in 129 2/3 innings this summer. His last start was a complete-game three-hitter for the Aces. In 2010, between Advanced A Visalia and Mobile, he posted a 2.65 ERA in 27 starts and fanned 113 in 153 innings.
MICHAEL SCHWIMER
RHP, Philadelphia Phillies
B/T: R/R H/W: 6-8/240 BORN: Feb. 19, 1986
ACQUIRED: Selected in the 14th round of 2008 out of Virginia
PROMOTED: Contract purchased from Triple-A Lehigh Valley Aug. 17 when IF Placido Polanco went on the DL
DEBUT: Aug. 21 in a 5-4 10-inning loss to the Washington Nationals: The second of four pitchers, he allowed one run on two hits in three innings, striking out four without walking a batter.
NOTES: The big right-hander has been dominant in his relief role the last two years, earning mid-season All-Star Game spots both summers. With Lehigh Valley this year, he had a 9-1 record and 1.88 ERA to go with 10 saves in 46 games, limiting International League hitters to a .202 average and fanning 86 in 67 innings. Last summer, between Double-A Reading and Lehigh Valley, he had a 2.85 ERA in 48 games, striking out 76 in 60 innings.
